Mojo Music | Getting Your Mojo Back…. What Does That Mean?
“Got my mojo working, but it just won’t work on you”. Muddy Water’s 1957 classic is all about mojo. Austin Powers, international man of mystery, famously lost his mojo and it seems everyone has been looking for theirs since. What exactly is mojo?
Does it mean it is your turn to buy coffee, is it all about keeping up with the latest trends in music or are you rummaging around for that precious last condom?
High street brands have adopted the name to popularise their products, such as, mojo music magazine, mojo coffee and mojo condoms. Mojo, it seems, is sought by all.
Mojo has African roots and is said to refer to a magic charm that brings good luck. But the movie Austin Powers staring Mike Myers has put “mojo baby” back into everyday language. Powers refers to ‘mojo’ as his virility and ability to attract “a shag, yeah groovy baby!”
The official definition of ‘mojo’ is “finding the magic in what we do”. To have “lost your mojo”, refers to a loss of inspiration or creative genius; a loss of that special spark. The word has been around for almost 100 years, one source cites its use to as early as 1926.
However mojo it seems has been around a lot longer than that. A recently discovered species of Canadian dinosaur had a heart-shaped frill on its head that is believed to have attracted mates.
As a result it has been given one of the sexiest names in paleontological history, “Mojoceratops” had some serious ‘mojo’ going for it when luring mates about 75 million years ago.
If dinosaurs, with brains the size of a pea, could sort out their mojo, surely the rest of us should have no problem.
