Music Together | Vince Gill And Amy Grant To Perform At Crown
Dec. 17–She grew up singing in churches; he grew up singing in bars.
Amy Grant and Vince Gill, who have been married since 2000, learned long ago how to make beautiful music together.
“So, I’ll set ‘em up and he knocks ‘em down. It’s silly and somber — organized chaos really,” Grant said in a phone interview.
The Christian and country music superstar couple will kick off the 2010-11 Community Concerts series Friday night at the Crown Theatre with a Christmas and holiday-themed concert.
“With ticket sales and the feedback we’ve received, it’s already one of our most popular shows yet,” said Michael Fleishman, the organizations attractions director. “These are two incredible artists; it’s certainly going to be one heck of a way to start our 75th anniversary season.”
Grant and Gill were meteoric stars in their respective music industries — he with country music, she with Christian — before they married. The couple has one child together — a daughter, Corrina Grant Gill.
Grant spoke with Weekender from the cozy living room of their Nashville home. She said she is looking forward to the upcoming performance at the Crown Theatre.
“I often find myself performing during the holidays,” Grant said. “But I love touring at Christmas time. The shows are about family and creating a meaningful experience you can share with loved ones. Just show up — I promise we’ll create that magic moment for you.”
Weekender: What can people expect at the concert?
Grant: Great music, nostalgia, and a killer band with a four-piece horn section. We have some legendary musicians joining us. The show is going to be beautiful and lush, but also have a cozier feeling at the same time. Vince and I also have a lot of fun; he’s got a wicked sense of humor.
Weekender: Really? How so? Do you two banter back and forth?
Grant: Oh yeah. That’s part of the show.
Weekender: Any hint at the set list?
Grant: Christmas songs! Do you have a request? No kidding, we are still adding songs. The show will be 80-percent holiday music, with classics like “Jingle Bells.” And the rest will be a few non-Christmas songs. We’ll play a song or two from Vince’s upcoming album, and I’ll throw in “Better than a Hallelujah.”
Weekender: What’s it like to be married to someone who has, perhaps, shared or endured similar experiences in the music business?
Grant: I think it’s wonderful for any couple to have as many shared experiences as possible. The more you have in common makes for a richer friendship. We talk about how our careers have been gifts to both of us.
Weekender: What has been your secret to success in life and love?
Grant: Lots of communication. We’ve been married nearly 11 years, and the things that are the toughest in your relationship ultimately you learn the most from.
Weekender: How do you feel your music and career has evolved?
Grant: On one hand, I’m doing the same thing I’ve been doing since 15 — writing, playing guitar and singing a song. On the other, I feel like I have such a broader life experience to draw from now. I’ve known years of enormous audiences and then years of only the most loyal fans showing up.
Weekender: What are some of your favorite holiday or Christmas tunes to perform?
Grant: Actually, I love a lot of songs that I can’t vocally pull off. Like “O Holy Night.” So I write things I can actually do, but that’s the fun thing touring with Vince. All the songs I don’t have a range for, he does. But you know what I really love?
Weekender: What’s that?
Grant: When the audience sings along, especially on songs like “O Come, All Ye Faithful” or “Silent Night.” When the audience sings along, it brings a lump to my throat.
Grant and gill
Amy Grant
She began her career as a Christian artist before finding some crossover success in pop music with her successful albums “Unguarded” and “Heart in Motion,” which spawned No. 1 singles “Baby Baby” and “Every Heartbeat.” A talented singer and songwriter, Grant has won six Grammy Awards, 25 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, and had the first Christian album ever to go platinum. She has sold more than 30 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling Christian artists of all time.
Vince Gill
Grant’s husband is a prolific performer and recording artist. He has churned out more than 20 studio albums, charted more than 40 singles on the U.S. Billboard charts and sold more than 22 million albums. Gill has won 18 Country Music Association awards, including two Entertainer of the Year awards and five Male Vocalist Awards. He’s also racked up 20 Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
Vince Gill and Amy Grant are one of country music’s most prolific — and popular — couples, but they’re not alone. Here’s a short list of a few other country music couples:
Tim McGraw Faith Hill
Married: 14 years
Known for: The country music luminaries met on their first tour together, appropriately named the “Spontaneous Combustion” tour. McGraw has spread his wings into acting, including the award-winning “The Blind Side,” while Hill took over the theme song to Monday Night Football. As if that doesn’t keep them busy, both have their own fragrances as well, McGraw and True.
Garth Brooks Trisha Yearwood
Married: 5 years
Known for: Despite tabloid rumors of how their relationship began, the longtime friends and collaborators made wonderful music together. and more, when they married Dec. 10, 2005.
George Jones Tammy Wynette
Married: 6 years
Known for: She was the “First Lady of Country Music,” while he was known as “The Possum.” While Wynette did the best she could to stand by her man, Jones’ wild-partying ways made life difficult for country music’s “first couple.”
Johnny Cash June Carter
Married: 35 years
Known for: They met performing together at the Grand Ole Opry and formed a bond that weathered the trials and tribulations of Cash’s wild lifestyle. Carter is credited for co-writing one of Cash’s biggest hits, “Ring of Fire.” It’s fitting, perhaps, that only a few months after Carter passed away, Cash followed.
Miranda Lambert Blake Shelton
Married: They are engaged, with plans to marry in 2011.
Known for: Both are rising stars in the country music industry and recently cleaned house at the 2010 Country Music Awards. Lambert walked home with awards for Best Album, Female Vocalist, and Video. Shelton won for Male Vocalist, Collaborative Video and Vocal Event.
