School Of Seven Bells” “Disconnect From Desire” Tuesday July 13th 2010 @ 12:00 pm Disconnect From Desire is similar to their first album, Alpinisms yet seems more thought out, more mastered. It attempts many of the same feats as the first album, but this second record comes out even better. The songs are filled with layer upon layer of synthetic sound and it all seems to come together in one collective, unified whole making each song a beautiful compilation of sound and music. School Of Seven Bells display great growth with this album and it’s all for our listening benefit. Disconnect From Desire begins with the song “Windstorm,” immediately sweeping the listener in. The happy, uplifting feel of the song threatens to take you away from whatever you were previously focusing on to a different land filled with layers upon layers of synthetic, electronic sounds and a high, soft ethereal voice that seems to find a way to command attention. The lyrics are abstract and suggest that each sentence holds some sort of secret meaning that only School of Seven Bells truly understands. “Windstorm” continues to evolve, grow and get better in the short three minutes it plays making it a continuous adventure for the listener. If this were the only song on the album, School of Seven Bells would still have successfully shown off their musical prowess. Yet, for our pleasure and benefit they decided to go on and make more songs, namely “Heart is Strange.” The second song off this album gives a bit of a different feel; A little on the darker side of the spectrum, School of Seven Bells reveal that they can be edgy too. This song holds more of a dancing beat, with a strong bass line underneath the thickness of other surrounding sounds that combine to make one great song. The mixtures of sounds make this track seem deep, as if there is so much more going on than we can really grasp. This song lasts for five minutes, but I can guarantee, you won’t be bored for a second of it. Throughout the album, School of Seven Bells seem to be experimenting with some new techniques and sounds and just about everything comes off as a success. Songs, like “I L U” are more on the simple side of production, without such a thick layering of experimental sounds making it sound very “chill.” Whereas, “Camarilla,” which come later in the album, has a sci-fi feel. After listening to School of Seven Bells, you quickly realize it’s hard to find psychedelic music like this anywhere else. Disconnect From Desire is an album crammed with full-bodied, smart music. Each song is unique and different, yet the album finds a way to come together as one cohesive unit. Throughout the differences in each song, the underlying unifying features of School of Seven Bells allow the album to be viewed as one complete production. This album has the potential to appeal to music fans of almost all genres owing to the diversity of sounds involved in each song.
